The 18th CLSS-UK Annual Meeting Successfully Held in London
(London, 7 September 2012)
The 18th CLSS-UK annual meeting was successfully held on 7th September 2012 at King’s College, University of London. Over 100 Chinese students and scholars from various regions of the UK attended the meeting
The meeting commenced with opening speeches by the CLSS-UK Chairman Prof. XU Qingbo and the local organizing committee chairwoman Prof. ZHOU Wuding from the KCL. Prof. Xu Qingbo wished the great success of the meeting and expressed his sincere thanks to the excellent organization of the meeting on behalf of the society. This meeting invited the Nobel Prize Laureate 2001 Sir Professor Tim Hunt and other Chinese researchers who have made outstanding achievements in the life sciences in UK to present the special talks on the latest research progresses. Sir Professor Tim Hunt shared his personal experiences that led to the success of his scientific achievements, inspiring and encouraging the seated Chinese students and scholars to continually raise questions, actively explore and discover, widely communicate as well as solve problems in their career. The well-known life scientists Prof. Eric SO, Prof. DU Mingqing and Prof. LU Xin presented their recent leukaemia research results. They introduced the mechanisms of the pathology of leukaemia and also the latest advances in the treatments on it. The Dean of the Faculty of Life Sciences, Beijing University, Prof. RAO Yi reported the latest research progress of the social behaviours of animals. His humorous presentation impressed all the audience while making them fully enjoy his talk in a great laugh. The chairman of the CLSS-UK Prof. XU Qingbo from King’s College and Prof. CHEN Zhengming from the University of Oxford gave talks on the recovery mechanisms of the vascular endothelium after injury and the necessity of establishing a large-scale database for epidemiologic research, repectively.

The meeting also invited Ms YAN Li, the First Secretary of the Chinese Embassy in UK, Prof. CHENG Jingqiu, the Vice Director of the West China Hospital, West China School of Medicine, Sichuan University, Ms CHENG Jianfang from the Beijing Zhongguancun National Hi-tech Park. They introduced the information and polices on entrepreneurship and working at China for those overseas Chinese who were interested in starting or continuing their career in China. The well-known ENT consultant Dr. JIANG Dan briefly introduced the general ways and all the essential requirements of how to be clinical doctor in UK.
Chinese Life Scientists Society in UK (CLSS-UK) was founded in 1992 and since then on the society has been devoting itself to build a link for life and bio-medical scientists between UK and China. Now CLSS-UK is the only organisation in the United Kingdom that represents all the Chinese scientists in life and bio-medical fields from mainland China and it also has become one of the most important professional organisations within Chinese community. CLSS-UK has its members consisting of the best academics, scientists, clinicians, and students from all over the UK, as well as from China and the member number is still increasing.

The CLSS-UK organisation committee would like to remind you that the registration deadline for 18th CLSS-UK Annual Meeting has been extended to 15th Aug 2012. The event will be held at New Hunt House, King’s College London, 5 minutes walk from London Bridge station. The symposium aims to provide a platform for Chinese life scientists in UK to exchange ideas, share experience and establish collaborations with each other and also with life scientists in China. Invited speakers will share both their research and career aspiration with all attendants. Confirmed speakers are listed below, which includes Nobel Prize Laureate Sir Professor Tim Hunt, Director of NSFC Medical Department Dr. Erdan Dong, Dean of PKU School of Life Sciences Professor Yi Rao and president of CLSS-UK Professor Qingbo Xu.
Registration is free for all Chinese life scientists from UK academic institutions, but a submitted registration form is required before the deadline, 15th Aug 2012. There are still travel grants available for young scientists (up to £60 in covering the costs of travelling and accommodation). Please tick the proper box in the registration form if you would like to apply.
CLSS-UK will provide a symposium dinner party in a central London Chinese restaurant on Friday evening, 7th Sep. It will be a 10 course dinner plus free alcohol and soft drinks. Symposium attendants are welcomed to attend this dinner party with a small contribution of £10. Payment can be made through bank transfer or by cash on Friday, 7th Sep. Please tick the proper box in the registration form to inform us when register, since places are limited.

On behalf of the Chinese Life Scientists Society in UK (CLSS-UK), we cordially invite all Chinese students, scientists, clinicians and academics who are currently studying or working in UK in the life science and biomedical fields to attend the 18th symposium of the CLSS-UK which will be held in King’s College London on September 7-8, 2012.
The symposium aims to provide a platform for Chinese life scientists in UK to exchange ideas, share experience and establish collaborations with each other and also with life scientists in China. It will offer:

Abstract must be in English. Please type your abstract in Times New Roman, Font 12, using Microsoft Word and save it in MS word format.

Title should be concise and typed in capital bold letters.

Presenting authors should be underlined. Please provide FIRST NAME in full, followed by the LAST NAME for all authors. The telephone number and e-mail address of the presenting author must be included. Leave a line space between title and authors.

List department, institution, city of the authors. Leave a line space between affiliation and main body of abstract.

The abstract should be single-spaced, typed in lower case and the main text should not exceed 400 words. The content should include: OBJECTIVE, METHODS, RESULTS, and CONCLUSIONS. The use of tables or figures is not recommended.
